Acrylic Paint - Brushes
Brush shapes and sizes vary according to their function. They are made from natural hair, natural bristle or are synthetic. These different materials are recommended for use with different media. HAIR - water colour, BRISTLE - oil/acrylic, Synthetic - Acrylic. These are generalisations. The character of the mark when creating surface decoration is what will give the work its individuality. The tips or points of these brushes are the hairs or bristles natural ends. The actual hair tapers naturally to a point, having a thicker "belly" part. The lengths vary from1/8" to 2 1/4". The bristles fork and split. This multiple ending is called the "flag". The shaping and trimming of the brush is down at the "ferrule" end. The chosen hairs or bristlers are set into the ferral in a rubber compound and vulcanised. The meatal ferrule is firmly attached to its handle by a crimping machine. The ferrule is the meatal section surroundig the base of the brush and should be seamless, because if the handle absorbs too much water it may swell and split the ferrule at the seam - the weakest point. Ferrules are usually made from either nickel-plated brass, brass tubes palted with gold (!) or solid cuprol-nickel, a copper content in nickel which is itself corrosion-resistant. I hope to next write a short article on how to care for these brushes, Philip Davey
