Butlins Chairlifts
Out of the original Butlin’s sites, six had chairlifts (also known as Rope Railways, Ropeway & cableways)as part of their attractions mostly installed around the 1960's. Some of the chairlifts carried out a real transport need and were used daily in the running of the camps although the others served primarily as entertainment rides for Butlin's guests. All but one of the chairlift systems were supplied by the London company of British Chairlifts Ltd, a subsidiary of British Ropeway Engineering Company Ltd.
This very same firm were also responsible for the original system at Alton Towers (in 1963) and Drayton Manor Park, amongst many others. The odd one out was the chairlift at Barry Island as this was manufactured by the Swiss company of Von Roll. For the technically minded the operating speed was 600 feet per minute (just under 7 mph) and it's power was supplied by an electric motor ranging from 25HP to 65HP dependent on the length and size of the installation. A petrol engine was also installed for use as an emergency backup system in the event of a power faliure. All were of the detatcheable grip type with cabins (or cars) seating two people, the cabins being carried on a continuousm steel rope All of the Butlins chairlifts have now been removed. A cabin from the Filey system was preserved and is now sitting in a garden in the north of England . Some parts of the old Barry chairlift were purchased by Blackpool Pleasure Beach for use as spares on their own Von Roll system. But presumably the rest were scrapped. |
