Decoupage & Collage - a short history
Collage is the pasting or gluing of paper, fabric or any natural or manufactured material. As a decorative effect in which the surface is totally covered. As a pictorial composition, the word collage is generally more accepted. The invention of paper is attributed to the Chinese during the second centurey AD. Collage also has its origins in Ancient China. Traditional images were cut from transparent papers and later from postage stamps, bank notes ane illustrations. these images were mounted on silk, the finer areas of which were oftern cut away, revealing the silk underneath. Collage has evolved from the nineteenth century french recreational activity of "Paper Colles" - literally, "paper stuck". designs were created by pasting down cut out pieces of coloured paper onto flat surfaces. The technique was adopted by the fine arts around 1912. Matisse describes his collage activites as "cutting in living colour". Picasso first incorporated the paste up technique in his cubist paintings, differing surfaces offering him new ways to represent textures and planes. Dadiests and surrealists also took to the technique. By now both natural and manufactured items : wood, sand, glass, newspaper and many other found objects were all game for "pasting". So, the "Papier" was left out and "Colles" became "collage" - the technique of pasting". American artists became involved in the technique. The refuse of the 50's and 60's consumer society took collage into a new era becoming the living pallette of American Pop Art. Drink cans, magazines, plastics, printed packaging and advertising art were all used. Names spring to mind - Andy Warhole, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenestein. I hope to be able to add more artcles soon describing the varioustechniques that are available, Philip Davey
