Decoupage & Collage - french terms.

Here are some French terms which have been used for the various techniques employed by experimental artists.

AFFICHES LACEREES - Torn posters.

BRULLAGE - burned or scorched work.

DECHIRAGE - tearing, or torn paper used in collage.

DECOLLAGE - partially pated or partially torn away.

ECLABOUSSE - paint spattered or dripped on the surface.

FLOTTAGE - colours floated on water and transferred to surface.

FROISSAGE - crumpled or crushed paper or other material pasted.

FUMAGE - patterns created by smoking

GRATTAGE - scratching or scraped areas.

LACERE ANONYME - a found object consisting of paper, such as a poster or ticket, found in a battered condition and incorporated into the work.

ASSEMBLAGE - a truely 3 dimentional gatthering of objects dispalyed in such a manner as to exibit aesthetic qualities of form.

FROTTAGE - the technique or rubbing, such as brass rubbings: the creation of pattern taken from a textured surface or from a pictorial image. Paper is held over the surface and rubbed with a pencil. With accurate pressure tyhe surface is transferred as an image onto the paper or medium which is themn pasted onto the complete work.
