Growing Banana Plants in the UK
I have been growing (or trying) to grow bananas in the UK now for about 8 years. I first started in my old house which although only about 500 yds from where I live now must have had a "micro climate" as I had much more success there than my current house. The ultimate challenge is of course to grow them permanently outside in the UK as root hardy banana plants for tropical bedding. Although many plants are classified as "hardy" I have only had any reasonable success with "Musa Basjoo", my first plant being bought on Ebay for just £4.00. There are many methods listed to overwinter your plants including surrounding your plant(s) with about 10 ton of hay or similar matter, but I simply wrap it up in October with a layer or two of gardening fleece then wrap and old blanket on top. Come March I unwrap the plants and start them into growth by giving them a good watering and a solution of Miracle Grow - then dont stop. During the summer months, water, water, feed, water, water, feed etc throughout the entire summer and you will be rewarded. Yes, I have had bananas on my plants but these were about 4 inches long and soon became black as they appeared towards the end of summer and I think that the frost got to them. Any side shoots that come up (and you will get them) cut them off with a knife (leave a bit of root attached) and replant elswhere and soon you will have your very own plantation. Good Luck. |
