How sailors took a Lunar distance at sea

One way to have known the time at sea was to compare the position of the Moon relative to certain bright stars in the sky. From 1767, navigators could use The Nautical Alamanac which provided co-ordinates for the Moon and the stars, setting them against the local time at Greenwich. Until publication of the nautical Alamanac however, sailors had no way of knowing how far east or west they were from home.

A sailor like Christopher Columbus, even though thought of to be an expert in astronomical navigation, relied much more on his intimate knowledge of the sea - the shape of the swells, the degree of saltness in the water, the evidence of flotsam and jetsom in the water all of which helped to warn of approaching land.
