How to clean cat urine stains from a carpet
For fresh urine stains, try to absorb as much of the cat urine as possible, blotting with paper towels, but not rubbing as this will push the stain further into the carpet. After you're sure you've gotten as much moisture out of the rug as possible, use an entire glass warm water pouring it over the stained area. Repeat the same step as before, blotting the area by firmly pressing the clean towels into the carpet (but NOT rubbing) and always working from the outside in, so as not to spread the stain. With a quart of warm water and a half cup white vinegar, again soak the affected area before blotting dry, and then using a wet/dry vacuum, or even a fan or hair dryer on the cool setting, for absorbing or evaporating the remaining liquid. Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the stained area before adding a quarter to a half cup of hydrogen peroxide, depending on the size of the stain, along with a tablespoon of mild dish detergent. Work the ingredients into the carpet with a scrub brush, making sure you reach down into the fibres of the rug, then allow to dry completely before vacuuming. To deodorize carpeting and for keeping the whole house fresh without merely masking smells, it’s simple to create your own inexpensive rug deodorizer using a few common ingredients. Combine a half cup of cornstarch with a half cup of baking soda, mix thoroughly and sprinkle all over the carpets. Allow to set for a few hours, overnight preferably, before vacuuming. For an extra pleasant scent, add a few drops of your favourite essential oils to the baking soda and cornstarch.
