Repairing a puncture in a air bed
The first thing to do is to locate the puncture. If the hole is big then the air escaping may be heard. If this does not work, then half inflate the airbed and slowly submerge parts of it under water (in a large bowl) until air bubbles appear and then trace these back to the puncture. Obtain a repair kit from a camping shop. Kits for rubber and canvas beds have a rubber solution, kits for plastic beds contain a liquid cement - you MUST ensure that you have the right one.
Clean the damaged area using petrol/lighter fuel on rubber-canvas but use only water on a plastic bed otherwise the lighter fuel/petrol will melt the plastic. Allow the cleaned area to dry before attempting the repair. Rubber & Canvas Bed
Select a patch large enough to overlap the puncture - with some to spare. Apply the rubber solution to the punctured area, allow it to dry and apply a second coat. Treat the back of the patch the same way, after first roughening with glasspaper. When the solution is dry press the patch firmly in position and allow to dry for a minimum of 12 hours. Plastic Bed.
Spread only one coat of liquid cement on both the patch and the bed. Apply the patch pressing it firmly in position and leave to dry for 5-6 hours. |
