Scooters gain popularity as gas prices increase

Rocketing gas costs and the warm weather have sparked off a buying craze of highly fuel-efficient scooters that's emptied most dealerships in HACKENSACK, New Jersey and increased sales of scooter insurance policies.

What's pulling in customers to the two-wheel side is their high fuel consumption rate: Small-engine scooters -- those with 50 cc -- can get up to 100 miles per U.S. gallon; larger ones -- 650 cc -- get 50 to 70 miles per gallon. That converts to 2.36 L/100 km and 4.73 to 3.38 L/100 km, respectively.

Joe Tramontana, 48, drives his new Vespa to his business in Tenafly and uses it to take his 12-year-old girl to her day camp, instead of his Nissan Armada. The Armada was costing him $120 a week to fill up the tank; the Vespa, $7 every couple of weeks.

Dealers say interest in scooters and small- to medium-size motorcycles, which also give a higher fuel consumption rate, began in May when gasoline prices neared $4 a gallon, where prices have stayed.

Top speeds for scooters can alter based on make and model, but dealers say the 50cc can achieve around 65 km/h, the 150cc between 100 to 110 km/h and some 650cc can exceed 160 km/h.

Said Edgar Luzunaris, sales manager for Ramsey Motorsports. "People keep coming in and saying that they would like to economise on fuel, but they're a couple months late on the idea."

It's the same story elsewhere: The usually less popular vehicles dealers carry in small numbers are in high demand. Manufacturers didn't foresee the surge, so dealers have been unable to pull in new stock. Dealers say they're increasing next year's orders for scooters and small to medium bikes.

Auto insurance underwriters that offer motorcycle insurance policies -- required in New Jersey for scooters -- also are seeing steep increases in the number of new scooter policies sold this year likened with previous years.

Scooters are powered largely by gas engines and differ from motorcycles with engines in the back and a step-through design. They're conceived to be easier to ride because you do not have to shift gears.

Engine size is calculated in cubic centimetres ranging from 50cc (they can get up to 2.36L/100 km) to about 650cc (they can get about 4.73L/100 km). Costs range from $1,899 to more than $8,000.

I wanted one of these long before the rise in gas prices. They are so fun and economical.
