Texas Hold'em - The Basics
Texas Hold'em has become the most popular form of Poker over recent years thanks to televised tournaments such as the WPT and WSOP, as well as the growth in online gaming... The Basics. Each player is is dealt two cards face down(known as the "hole" or "pocket" cards) followed by a first round of betting. As long as there are two or more players still in the game, three cards are then dealt face up on the table. These are "community" cards (ie. all the players may use these to complete their hands) and are referred to as "the flop". There is then another round of betting, followed by a forth community card being dealt face up (the "turn" or "forth street"). Again a round of betting takes place, followed by the final community card being dealt (known as "the river"). All players now have access to all seven cards (two in their hand and five community cards) which they can use to make their best 5 card poker hand. After a final round of betting, all active players must then "showdown" - revealing their final poker hand, with the best hand winning the pot. If you call only to see a better hand, you have the option to "muck" without showing the other player(s) your hand. Blinds. Most people are familiar with poker hands featuring "antes" - where each player must put forward a set fee if they wish to play in that particular hand. In Hold'em these mandatory bets are called "blinds". The player to the immediate left of the dealer posts the "small blind", and the player to their immediate left posts the "big blind". The amounts depend on the limit agreed but the big blind is usually double the amount of the small blind. This mandatory action gets the game going and helps to increase the pot. In tournament structures the blinds usually increase at set intervals (say every 15 minutes) ensuring that the game progresses at a pace. Perhaps I might meet you online for a game, Philip Davey, also known as "PokerFace".
